Master’s Degree Dissertation: “Studies on Structure and Properties of Injection Molded PVDF”
(Supervisor: Prof. Devang V. Khakhar, Department of Chemical Engineering- IIT Bombay, Jan’09 –
Jun’10)
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) exhibits four crystal forms (α, β, γ, δ), of which α and β are most
common. The β phase is highly polar and useful in piezoelectric and pyroelectric applications. The
phase transformation in PVDF depends on the processing parameters such as temperature, pressure
etc. This work deals with understanding the phase transformation behavior in PVDF during
crystallization. PVDF mixed with different wt% of Benzyl Triphenyl Phosphonium Chloride (BTPC).
Tensile (ASTM D638 Type-I) and flexural samples are prepared using injection molding machine at
different mold temperatures. The study on mechanical properties shows increase in elongation at
break by 26% and toughness by 30% for the samples prepared with 1 wt% addition of BTPC. XRD
pattern shows β-phase formation in PVDF by the addition of BTPC at all mold temperatures. DSC
studies shows increase in melting temperature for the samples prepared with the addition of BTPC.
SAXS patterns indicating that the addition of BTPC decreased the long period. Finally, the results
confirm that addition of fillers produces β-phase PVDF in injection molding at different processing
conditions.

Fluids in Various Geometries”

P. Kanakaraju, Scientist, SDSC, Dec’07-April’08)
